She submitted herself for an Emmy. Now she’s a nominee

Here's how I can relate to this story about submitting yourself for an award.

Around 1989 the Daytime Emmys were about to put out their nominations. I had written a really good, funny razzle dazzle song about the Daytime Soap opera shows that was featured in an ABC parody of their own show, "One Life to Live", entitled "The Daisy Awards."

 But there was no best song category! I called up the TV academy and a guy said "We're having a meeting this week. Come on down and talk to us, make your point. So I showed up to the TV academy meeting and made my point. They then created a new category entitled "Outstanding Original Song." (BTW if you have ever been nominated for it since 1989, you're welcome.) I attended the nomination announcement ceremony, and lo and behold I was nominated! There's also a grainy video of the whole production number elsewhere on youtube, but this has better sound. So I flew to LA, attended, along with some musical idols who also now got nominated. Don't ask me why, but they did not give the award, so I neither won nor lost. But, hey, submit yourself for awards! BTW the following year I attended the actual Daytime Emmy show, hosted by Oprah. They used my song as the opening number.
